Jamaican David Pinto presents 'New Growth' at Mutual Gallery

Jamaican potter David Pinto, hailing from Trelawny, is in gear for Mutual Gallery where he will bear his ‘New Growth’. ‘New Growth’ is the name of his latest exhibition at the Oxford Road location slated for Thursday, December 6th at 7 p.m.

Pinto recently published a book on sculpting, and now shows his two latest groups of sculptures. The first reflects “a personal journey of fertility, blending the sensuality of human and plant forms”, and the second is a smaller collection of massive three-legged vessels is titled ‘Soul Serving’.

His works promises to be exciting as the ceramist who possess a unique mind this time presents tall, human-like sculptural forms from his dreamy world at good Hope. His vessels a study of reproduction combines the human form and elements of plant production such as seeds into his creative life-size art forms.

In his 20 year career, Pinto has served on the board of the National Gallery of Jamaica, offered his expertise as a visiting examiner at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. The founder of the ceramics department at the now-defunct Cultural Arts Centre in Montego Bay, Pinto has had numerous exhibitions and taught ceramics internationally.

At his Trelawny-based studio, Pinto hosts international workshops and classes, working with leaders in his field. He opens his doors to facilitate school visits as part of his workshop programme focused on influencing an appreciation of art, clay, and firing.

The launch of ‘New Growth’ is open to the general public and is sponsored by National Commercial Bank, Carreras Group, Ideal Portfolio Services, RBC Royal Bank, SuperPlus, Island Mist, JN General Insurance, BCIC, KOOL 97 FM, and Wray and Nephew.

Two days later, Pinto will host an open house at his studio/gallery at Good Hope studio, Trelawny. On December 15 and 16, he will also showcase his functional work at the annual Potters’ Fair at the Forestry Department on Constant Spring Road in St Andrew.
Several pieces from Pinto’s ‘New Growth’ collection have been selected to be part of the Bi-Annual Exhibition this year at the National Gallery of Jamaica.
